Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones along with Golf Course Architect, Alister MacKenzie, built the Augusta National Golf Club on a 365 acre former plant nursery.
Hoping to market their golf course on a national level, Jones and Roberts lobbied the USGA to host the 1934 United States Open Golf Championship, but were turned down.
That decision, by the USGA, led Bobby Jones in another direction which ultimately would lead to the creation of one of the greatest sporting spectacles in the world.
