There are some pundits in the sphere of journalism that would decry the record-setting performance of the #1 player in the World and his overwhelming victory in the COVID-19 delayed 2020 Masters Golf Tournament.
Those same scribes might place an asterisk next to the name of the 84th Masters Champion, Dustin Johnson, because of the soft and placid scoring conditions brought about by the seasonal fall weather and rain that fell during the opening round.
And there are some diehard golf fans who would bemoan the fact, with no patrons allowed on the golf course to cheer and motivate the best golfers on the planet, that it should not be considered a major sporting event.
And finally, some might feel, by moving the event to late fall, rather than conducting the tournament in its traditional April timeframe diminishes the historical and traditional aspects of one of Golf’s greatest spectacles.
But they would all be wrong.
When the annals of history are chronicled, Dustin Johnson’s masterful performance on the rolling hills and tree-lined fairways of the former plant nursery that is the Augusta National Golf Club will be recorded as a validation of his perseverance, talent, and physicality in dominating the golf course and the best players in the world.
In recording his second major golf championship, coupled with his 2016 Unites States Open Championship at Oakmont, along with 25 other wins on the PGA and world professional tours, Johnson becomes the first #1 player in the world to win the Masters since 2002. He never trailed after any round on his way to establishing a 72-hole scoring record at 20 under par, breaking a record held by Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.
It was a masterful and dominating performance, regardless of the naysayers’ complaints about the lack of drama, late fall placement, blooming azaleas and magnolias, spectators, or the golf course’s receptiveness.
Because, when all is said and done, he is the Master’s Champion and will wear the Green Jacket for the rest of his life.
I had a chance to listen in on the Champions interview as Dustin Johnson highlights his winning performance.
