Biographical Information on Jeff Waters, The Golf Guy, President & CEO of Rocky Mountain Golf, and Host of “Talking Golf.”
Jeff Waters, a proud member of “The Sons of Utah Pioneers“ who, except for his university attendance, military service, golf tournaments, broadcast, and media assignments worldwide, has lived, worked, and played in the Greater Salt Lake Valley and the Millcreek area of Canyon Rim his entire life.
Growing up in the majestic shadows of Mount Olympus on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, he spent his idyllic childhood and formative years frolicking amongst the canyons, gullies, orchards, open fields, streams, and creeks of unincorporated Salt Lake County. He was an active and eager participant in all things in the great outdoors, including scouting, sports, church, family, and other recreational pursuits.
Jeff was a happy, somewhat dreamy, and distracted student who graduated from Salt Lake City’s South High School in 1963, where he was involved in athletics, student government, and debate.
In high school, Jeff launched his fledgling political career by attending Utah Boys State and volunteering for the McGovern for President national presidential campaign while serving as a County and State party delegate.
He began his collegiate experience in Logan, Utah, on scholarship at Utah State University, where he pledged to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played football.
Jeff continued his academic studies at the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and teaching minors in Economics and Accounting. He then entered Graduate School at that same University, focusing on Commercial Recreation, where he taught undergraduate classes in the College of Health.
He completed his post-graduate education at the University of Phoenix, earning his Master’s Degree in Business Administration. (MBA)
A product and offspring of the Greatest Generation and the ingrained pride of Country and flag that cohort instilled in their progeny, Jeff answered his Nation’s call of duty by enlisting in the United States Army and was justifiably proud of his military service during the turbulent years of the Vietnam conflict.
He served honorably for six years, first with the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and then an extended tour of duty with I Corps and the 25th Field Artillery, earning numerous awards, citations, and medals. He is a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Upon his discharge and returning home from overseas deployment, Jeff and his new wife Shirley purchased one of the original farm properties in the Canyon Rim Community of Millcreek, where they raised their family and have lived for over forty years.
Pursuing a career as a working PGA Golf Professional, Mr. Waters labored, studied, aspired to, and then earned the distinguished and lofty status as a fully certified and trained PGA Master Professional to join an exceedingly small and elite group of Golf Professionals in the World to have achieved this prestigious title.
He has over 50 years of experience in the business of golf, including ten years of playing the game at all levels; 10 years as a Head Golf Professional overseeing all aspects of the total golf course operation; three years as Director of Player Development for Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, administering and managing multiple golf course programs and activities.
And for the past 30-plus years, he has been President and CEO of his golf management company, Rocky Mountain Golf Enterprises (RMG), a Utah registered and licensed business that offers golf-related services to the Rocky Mountain market.
Rocky Mountain Golf Enterprises also functions as a comprehensive, multi-media agency designed to promote golf-related products in the Rocky Mountain region utilizing golf as the marketing tool.
RMG has been recognized as one of few agencies in this market that combines a business organization, providing goods and services with a media outlet, marketing those goods and services to adequately targeted groups. These people play golf and embrace golf travel, instruction, and associated products.
RMGE continues to perform this extraordinary and unique niche position in the business of golf.
The golf-related products and services RMG provides include Golf Instruction, Travel, Broadcasting, Tournaments, Seasonal Promotions, Annual Productions, and Philanthropy.
The Rocky Mountain Golf Market comprises Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, A geographical area comprising more than 800,000 square miles and almost 20 million people.
Mr. Waters is known as an outstanding mentor and teacher in the sport of golf. He has given thousands of private and group lessons to every gender and age group.
His Rocky Mountain Golf Academy has attracted national attention for its innovative teaching approach and hundreds of satisfied students. Mr. Waters has participated in the PGA’s elite specialty teaching certification program, attended the PGA’s national Teaching and Coaching Summit, been awarded Teacher of the Year in Salt Lake County multiple times, and has hosted and organized golf trips, tournaments, and golf events throughout the United States.
A well-known golf journalist, Jeff Waters, has been active in print and broadcast media from a young age. His articles and instruction features’ regularly appear in the print media.
He has written two golf instruction books: “The Ten Commandments of Golf, Proven Principles That Make Your Golf Game Better,” And “The Short Game, the Transition from the Golf Course to the Putting Green.”
Both are available as e-book downloads and on Amazon.
He penned his first short story while still in his teens and has since published 100’s of articles, essays, and instruction pieces in magazines, blogs, internet forums, and other platforms.
He is the author of multiple books, numerous stories, and countless other writers’ work reviews.
Jeff began his broadcasting career in High School and has had a constant presence in sports journalism throughout the years, providing play-by-play and color commentary at many different levels, including announcing football, baseball, and basketball contests while performing on other sports media platforms as well.
He has provided the vocal narration for 1000’s voice-overs, commercials, radio programming, sports interviews, tournament updates, blogs, podcasts, audiobooks, and video productions, including the original voice work on the best-selling X-Box Links golf game.
Mr. Waters voiced and contributed to the audiobook’s narration, “One Hundred Years of the Utah State Amateur,” available on iTunes and Apple Music.
Jeff is Rocky Mountain Golf Network’s primary on-air voice talent, hosting a weekly Blog/Podcast, “Talking Golf With The Golf Guy,” broadcasted on selected Social Media Platforms and distributed globally on syndicated Podcast outlets around the World.
Waters has also produced, directed, and distributed numerous film and video productions as stand-alone presentations, incorporating them within his blog and national podcasts. All are available for review on YouTube.
Known as “The Voice of Golf” and “The Golf Guy” throughout the Intermountain West, Mr. Waters is regularly sought out for his advice and counsel and speaks to groups often on golf-related subjects.
Mr. Waters has attended, broadcasted, and written about golf tournaments worldwide, including The Masters, United States Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, regular PGA Tour events, Champions Tour events, Korn Ferry Tour events, and others, and holds continuing memberships in the PGA of America, Golf Writers Association of America, and the Shivas Irons Society.
Jeff has a long history of service, activism, and engagement in his community’s local and state politics, serving as caucus chairman and delegate to his party’s County and State Conventions.
He was twice his party’s candidate for the Utah State House of Representatives. He also ran for the inaugural Millcreek City Council and was an energetic champion for protecting Canyon Rim’s boundaries during the Township and Incorporation campaigns.
He has served as Chairman of CRCA, the Canyon Rim Citizens Association, Vice-Chairman of MCCA, and the Millcreek Community Council Association. He was CRCA’s representative to ACCT, the Association of Community Councils Together., and sat on the Municipal Services Districts Advisory Commission of Salt County.
In 2022, Jeff was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canyon Rim Cares Service Organization of Millcreek City.
He has also served admirably on many local boards and citizen advisory committees, including positions on the executive committees of the YMCA of Greater Salt Lake and the Utah Section of the PGA of America.
