In the long history of the United States Golf Association and its hosting of our National Championships, no one has competed in every USGA event available to her than Sue Billek Nyhus. A total of nine USGA Championships over a long and successful playing career.

It is a performance that will never be matched nor broken for the simple fact her record was achieved over a lifetime of sustained excellence, and some of the tournaments Coach Nyhus competed in, have been discontinued by the USGA.

Nevertheless, the Women’s Golf Coach at Utah Valley University, and a recent inductee into the Utah Golf Hall of Fame, will go down in history as one of the greatest athletes in the History of Utah Sports.

A two-time Utah Women’s Amateur Champion and the 1999 Utah Golf Association’s Player of the Year, Dr. Nyhus was an All-American performer at BYU, receiving her Undergraduate and Masters Degrees at BYU, before earning a PhD in Sports Psychology from the University of Utah while continuing her professional career on the Women’s European Tour.

I sat down with the two-time Mountain West Coach of the Year and marveled at her sustained longevity playing a difficult game at extremely high levels, her continued success in coaching and motivating college level athletes, her advanced academic accomplishments, and the recent birth of her grandchild.
